Developing Leaders: My $10 Million Passive Income Plan for 2023

In this post, I want to share my $10 million passive income plan for 2023. To make this plan a reality, we need to ensure that our business runs without us, becoming an asset that generates income independently of our time and efforts.

Last year, we scaled our business to reach a little over 30 million dollars. A significant factor in our success was that I was able to build up a lot of leaders in the organization, allowing me to buy back my time. To achieve this, I believe that developing leaders within your organization is crucial. There are two ways to do this. You can either transfer your talent to others, or you can bring in someone who already has the required skill and transfer the knowledge to you.

In either case, it is crucial to develop your leaders correctly. For example, if you’re a ten out of ten sales manager, even if you show someone how to do it, they may only be a five or six at first. That’s why it’s essential to grow and support them so they can reach their full potential.

The key to being a successful leader is to first learn the necessary skills yourself. For example, if you want to be a good sales manager, you need to learn sales management, and if you want to lead a client success team, you need to know how to run it. To be effective, I believe that you need to be 20% better than the minimum KPI expectation.

The right time to offload your responsibilities to others is when the work requires a full-time or part-time position, or when it accumulates to the point where it’s too much for one person to handle. As Jeff Bezos says, if a team is too big to share two pizzas, it’s too big, and once you have more than six direct reports, it’s good to have a manager in place. A manager can typically handle six to eight direct reports, but this number can vary depending on the team and their energy levels.

One way to develop leaders within your organization is through the player-coach method. This method involves gradually decreasing your KPI by 20–30% while increasing the number of direct reports you have. However, it’s important to be extremely definitive about the activities involved and not just expect your player-coach to figure it out on their own.

The problem with player coaches in sales is that there is a delicate balance between selfish and selfless activities. Sales is something that you can always do more of, even if you’re successful. That’s why I found player-coach to be a good method for gradually ramping down one’s KPI while increasing the number of direct reports.

In conclusion, developing leaders within your organization is crucial to achieving a $10 million passive income plan. Whether you transfer your talent to others or bring in someone who already has the skills, it’s important to support and grow your leaders so they can reach their full potential. By doing this, you can ensure that your business runs without you and becomes an asset that generates income independently of your time and efforts.
